South West Women’s Combination League QPR Ladies AFC 0 v 4 Newquay Ladies AFC

Newquay dominated this game throughout, with QPR having very little possession. Thanks to Lisa Hegarty and Jess Longworth they had very few chances on goal, and perhaps their best effort was saved early on by Carley Barber to prevent them taking the lead.

Newquays first goal came quite early in the game thanks to Carla Ward who slotted the ball into the goal from just inside the box. Ward soon added her second with an excellent shot from a tight angle. Nicky Brown had worked hard to win the ball in midfield and released the ball to Ward who ran towards the left of the goal and lifted the ball over the keepers head to put Newquay 2-0 up.

All of the Newquay team were working well together, and never stopped  chacing the ball. They added a third just before half time as Dawna Dennett hit a perfect long range shot low to the keepers right to hit the back of the net. At half time, Newquay knew they could add to their tally, but the second half did prove a lttle more difficult. Newquay were still on top, but they couldn’t seem to hit the back of the net. Chances fell to Leanne Griffiths and Candy Hopson, but neither could find the goal.

QPR was definitely stronger than in the first half, and were showing signs of pushing towards goal, but Vicky White was aware and prevented them breaking onto goal. Newquay finally added another goal before the whistle to make the final score 4-0. Holly Sandow latched onto a loose ball and finished from close range to give the visiting side a comfortable win.

Launton 0 - 8 Newquay Ladies

Newquay made the long trip to Oxfordshire well worth will by picking up their seventh straight win and their sixth game shut out.  A testament to goalkeeper Carly Barber and her defence.

The game was played in windy, wet conditions but Newquay made light of it with instructions from managers Pete Armstrong and Bernard McGivern ringing in their ears to shorten their game.  They carried the play to Launton with short, crisp passing moves that Launton struggled to cope with.  With the midfield battle being won by Candy Hopkin and Janine Butterly, the new strike force of Carla Ward and Holly Sandow were making Wilston work in the Launton goal to stop Newquay swamping them. Eventually a goal was to come, a swift interchange on the right wing from Hayley Stroud to Annie Richards, a fabulous cross was met at the far post by Holly Sandow who bulleted a header into the roof of the net.

On twenty minutes Newquay made it 2 - 0. Cutting in from the left, Carla ward unleashed an unsavable shot from 18 yards. Then on the stroke of half time Vicky White, overlapping on the left wing, powered past two defenders and her cross was met by Ward who stayed calm to slot it home to make it 3 - 0 at half time.

The second half started with the wind at Newquays back and with Barber in the Newquay goal looking very confident, Launton looked set for a torrid time. 10 minutes into the second half Newquay were 4 - 0 up. A move started by sweeper Jess Longworth was finished 8 passes later by Candy Hopkin.

Next a corner was met by Holly Sandow who back headered on to centre half Lisa Hegarty who sent a left foot volley past the diving Launton keeper.  5 minutes later, another Annie Richards cross was met by the hard working Janine Butterly to head home.

Next, the goal of the game with Newquay passing with speed, a move of 10 passes finished with Candy Hopkin squaring for Carla Ward to blast home a shot from 25 yards which seemed to be gaining speed as it hit the net, a goal to behold and what a way to wrap up a hatrick.  With 2 minutes to go it was time for Jess Longworth to score a rare goal, hitting home from 12 yards.

As the Launton manager said at the end of the game "Newquay are such a big, powerful side but unfortunately they can play a bit as well".  Manager Pete Armstrong was happy with the performance as Newquay had 4 players missing but a credit to the strength of the Newquay squad that when we rotate our team it doesn't make much difference to the style of play. Next on the road is a top of the table clash away at Keynsham Town.  "A job well done!" was the post match comments of joint manager Bernard McGivern.

Newquay Ladies AFC 0 v 0 Chesham Ladies AFC  / 26 Feb 06

Newquay hoped to take something away from the league leaders and from the start they entertained the fans hoping that a goal would eventually come. The game remained level throughout the first half as both midfields demonstrated some fluent football. Janine Butterly was preventing the ball from coming through with some important tackling, and Carla Ward was moving well around the pitch, releasing ball to the Newquay forwards. The first half didn't open up much for the Newquay side as they faced the wind, but the team defended well as Lisa Hegarty and Jess Longworth kept the Chesham strikers away from the Newquay goal. Hayley Stroud was also strong on the left and prevented any crosses from the right wing. Newquays best chance of the half fell to Dawna Dennett who hit a superb volley shot off an Annie Richards cross only to see the ball just go wide of the post. The Chesham midfield were also working well together and late on in the half they created a couple of clear chances, but keeper Carley Barber had to be aware throughout and made two crucial saves to keep the scores level.

Newquay came out in the second half hoping to take advantage of having the wind behind them and straight from the whistle they closed Chesham down looking as though they might find a break-though. But just as in the first half, the Chesham defence was strong and their goalkeeper was on good form blocking any Newquay chances. Chesham then broke away with a clear breakthrough on goal but a good block from Barber prevented the goal. They soon made a similar breakthrouh but a vital challenge from Vicky White prevented ther Chesham striker. White was impressive throughout the match and looked strong moving forward as well as defending.

Holly Sandow was working hard as she made some excellent moves on the defence, but was unlucky as she saw a number of shots blocked. The Newquay crowd were sure that one one of her shots had actually corssed the line but the referee waved play on. Dennett soon had another a chance to put Newquay ahead but much to the frustration of the crowd, saw the ball rebound off of the post.

Substitutes Candy Hopson and Jodie Botteril also created chances but luck didn't seem to be with Newquay as the ball just wouldn't cross the line. Newquay knew that this game was going to be tough against the league leaders Chesham, but the sides looked well matched for the whole ninety minutes. It was another brilliant team performance from Newquay who seem to be working as a unit more and more every week.

Cornwall County Cup Quarter Final – 19 Feb 06 at St. Columb Minor.  Newquay – 16:  Penryn – 0

Newquay comfortably progressed through to the County Cup semi finals against a plucky Penryn side. With most of the Newquay first team representing Cornwall in their match against Dorset, it was left to the young reserve side to fulfil this fixture. After Kim Eke opened the scoring in the 10th minute goals came at regular intervals and at the break Newquay were seven goals to the good.

The second half followed in much the same vein with Newquay continuing to add to their score.  Natasha Bailey, in the Newquay goal, was barely tested and her only problem seemed to be trying to keep warm in the icy conditions.  With Penryn tiring the final 20 minutes saw Newquay run in a further seven goals to take the final score to 16 – 0.

The very young Penryn side were a credit to themselves, never letting their heads drop and continuing to try and play good football.

Newquay scorers:

Jody Botterill – 4; Lou Vincent – 3; Kirsty Dunleavy – 2; Janine Butterly – 2; Amber Grose – 2; Kim Eke – 1; Becky Wilton – 1; Chelsea Easton – 1.

Swindon Towns Ladies 0;  Newquay Ladies AFC - 4

It took Newquay only six minutes to open the scoring, through a Holly Sandow strike. Dawna Dennett had done well to bring the ball under control and was unlucky to have her shot blocked, but Sandow was well positioned to put Newquay ahead.

Within only a minute the second goal came thanks to some brilliant football from Carla Ward and Nicola Brown. Ward picked up the ball in midfield and with great awareness picked out Brown who was making a run along the left. Brown then struck the ball inch perfectly into the box for Sandow to lob the advancing keeper to make it 2-0.

Newquay were easily on top playing some fluent football moving the ball across the pitch. Candy Hopson and Annie Richards were working hard in midfield ensuring that the defence were not tested. Unfortunately Brown had to come off as an injury to her shin meant that she was in some pain.

Substitute Jodie Botterill made a solid replacement and fitted into the game instantly. It wasn’t long before Newquay put the game out of reach when a strong Annie Richards cross allowed Sandow to tap the ball in for her hat-trick within only twenty minutes. She could have even got a fourth moments later as she leapt high into head the ball just inches over the cross bar.

Swindon tried to respond and at times played some nice football. But they didn’t seem to have the finishing touch as Jess Longworth easily cleared the ball and Leanne Griffiths and Laura Wensley prevented any crosses from the wings meaning that Carley Barber in the Newquay goal had virtually nothing to do.

In the second half the game seemed to quieten down as both teams made a very few attacks on goal. However Newquay soon picked up again, and were unfortunate not to add to the score line as Ward and Botterill both came close to scoring. Hayley Stroud and Vicky White soon came onto the pitch and gave Newquay a fresh boost but Swindon received a number injuries which meant that there was a number of stoppages.

With only two minutes remaining Newquay finally added a fourth as a Ward free kick rebounded off the keeper for Dennett to knock in. Lisa Hegarty who had a strong game in defence even came close to scoring as her thundering shot came off the cross bar right at the final whistle.

Newquay – 4, v. Newton Abbot – 0        Sunday, 29th January 2006

Newquay started strongly and had their opponents penned in their own half for long periods. For all Newquay’s possession Julie Brealy, in the visitors’ goal, was rarely tested as Abbot’s well organised defence were coping comfortably.

After 20 minutes, in a rare visitors’ attack, Carley Barber prevented Abbot taking the lead when she tipped a scorching effort over the bar. After more Newquay pressure Abbot again broke clear and thought they had taken the lead when Maxine Coupe’s far post header screamed into the net, only to be ruled out for offside.

Just before the break Carla Ward almost gave the hosts the lead but her header from Leanne Griffith’s corner went just the wrong side of the post.

Newquay had the ideal start to the second half when Holly Sandow reacted quickest from six yards out and flashed her shot high into the net with just two minutes of the second period gone.

Newton Abbot were then forced to come out of their defensive mode and five minutes later Ward almost doubled the lead when her effort from a pinpoint cross from Nicky Brown clipped the top of the bar.

In the home goal Barber was a virtual spectator and on the hour mark Ward played a superb ball out wide to Dawna Dennett. She hit a vicious shot across the keeper and into the corner of the net.

Newquay were a lot more relaxed at that stage keeping possession and playing some great one touch football. With ten minutes remaining Sandow played a through ball to Dennett who finished with some style. Sandow then scored a final goal when she chased down a ball she had no right to win and stabbed it into the net from no more than a yard out.

Newquay seem to have come to terms at this higher level and, on recent performances, no team will relish the thought of coming to Mount Wise. An excellent all round performance, the defence was strong, the midfield worked tirelessly and the front pair always looked likely to score.  By John Hawkey.

Women's South West Counties Championship - Group A

Gloucestershire FA v. Cornwall FA;    Sunday, 22nd January 2006

at Oaklands Park, Almondsbury   Result:  Gloucestershire 1, Cornwall 9

Cornwall stormed out of the blocks and were five nil to the good inside the first 20 minutes.  With five minutes gone Candy Hopson played the ball out wide to Dawna Dennett who rode two challenges before picking out Holly Sandow who coolly slid the ball into the net.

Four minutes later Katy Barker raced down the wing before crossing to Dennett who cleverly lobbed Jo Lenton, the home keeper.

Almost from the kick off Hopson won the ball back and advanced before unleashing a shot which Lenton could only parry towards Sandow.  She headed it straight back over the keeper into the net.

Judy Lawrence was then unlucky when her effort just cleared the bar.

In the 17th minute Sandow completed her hattrick when her effort from wide on the right deceived Lenton and nestled in the net.

Cornwall and Sandow were on fire at this stage anad two minutes later Dennett's powerful run into the area ended when she was brought down by Jess Cole.  Sandow converted the resulting penalty by sending Lenton the wrong way.

Five minutes later Gloucester scored from the penalty spot after Sandow was judged to have pushed Helen Wood.  Wood herself took the kick and although Carley Barber went the right way she couldn't prevent the ball hitting the back of the net.  This was to prove Barber's only touch for the first half.

With Kay Lewis, Hopson and Lawrence dominating the centre of the park Gloucestershire were struggling just to get a touch.  Lewis herself was unlucky when she ran through from her own half and unleashed a powerful shot which cannoned back off the bar.

On the half hour mark a superb free kick from Leanne Griffiths was converted by Sandow at the second attempt.

Ten minutes before the break the live wire, Barker, eluded two challenges down the right flank and sent in an excellent cross, which saw Dennett rise between two defenders to bravely head in number seven.

Just before the break Gloucestershire had their best chance when Michelle Purse burst through but hit her shot wide of the target.

Gloucestershire came out for the second half showing great heart but were finding it impossible to get any kind of effort on goal.  Cornwall's defence of Janine Butterly, Jess Longworth, Lisa Heggarty and Griffiths, were in commanding form, leaving Barber a virtual spectator.  Ten minutes into the half the hard working Hopson had to leave the field and was replaced by Claire Boyd.  Two minutes later Barker again showed her pace when she raced through and played in Sandow who calmly lobbed the keeper to take her personal tally to six.

Gloucestershire were then making it more difficult pulling everyone back behind the ball in an effort to quell the Cornwall onslaught.  With 20 minutes remaining Barker set up Boyd on the edge of the area but her effort flew just over the bar.  Three minutes later an identical move involving the same two players saw the same end result.

Butterly was then replaced by Hayley Stroud who got straight into the action with a crunching tackle to thwart a rare Gloucestershire foray forward.

Barber was replaced by Becky Pickin for her first taste of senior county football and although not being tested she looked assured and confident and will be an asset to the county in years to come.

With 15 minutes remaining a pinpoint free kick from Griffiths almost produced another goal when Dennett again showd her heading ability, only to see the ball land on top of the net.  Not to be denied her hattrick, Dennett used her tremendous strength to ride a number of challenges before picking her spot past the advancing keeper, giving a final score of 9 -1 to Cornwall.

Manager, Jim Wynn, had his tactics spot on.  The commitment he gets from his players shows the great respect they have for him and, vice versa, he believes in the girls and their ability to go out and put into practice what he preaches.  A tremendous effort from everyone involved.  The belief is there and the result puts Cornwall in a commanding position at the top of their group with an excellent chance to progress to the final.  A terrific team effort but the plaudits will probably go to the strikers and on this sort of form they will be a match for anyone.

NEWQUAY BEATS CLEVEDON 5-0

After the disappointment of last week, Newquay wanted to get back to winning ways with their first home game of 2006. With rainfall all of sunday morning, the pitch was extremely heavy, which made it very difficult to play the style of football that fans are used to, but Newquay tried to move the ball around midfield and did well in pushing the ball forwards

The first goal came after 18 minutes, as a brilliant pass from new signing, Nicola brown, put Candy Hopson through on goal which she powered past the advancing keeper to put Newquay ahead. Clevedon tried to bring the game level, but some dangerous tackles from their midfielders created tension between the two teams, with a number of  bookings for both sides. But Newquay tried to keep a cool head, as Lisa Hegarty and Jess Longwoth defended superbly, and the whole team continued to look for the second. It came just before half time, thanks to quick thinking from Holly Sandow. After Newquay had given the ball back to Clevedons keeper for kicking the ball out of play for the injured Hayley Stroud, Sandow took advantage after the keeper tried to take her on and finished the goal from a distance.

In the second half, the game started quite scrappily, as the mud was getting heavier and all of the players were slipping and sliding all over the pitch. But Vicky White was doing well to keep the ball away from the Newquay box and was working well with Jody Botteril in midfield to push everyone forward.

Sandow soon added her second as she moved well between the defence to put Newquay 3-0 up. Clevedon tried to respond but couldn't seem to find any rythm, and gave goalkeeper Carley Barber very little to do. After a brilliant home debut, Brown then scored her first goal for the club with a fine shot struck from the edge of the 18-yard box. Janine Butterly was also having a strong game in midfield; blocking any breakthroughs and preventing any Clevedon attacks on goal. Dawna Dennett then finshed the game off as she worked hard to round the keeper and slot the ball into the net.

The game definatley wasn't played in very good conditions, but credit goes to Newquay who played well despite challenges from the opposition coaches. The Clevedon manager was even shown a red card for his verbal abuse towards the Newquay team.

Newquay Ladies AFC - Mid Season Report – 2005/06

Having gained promotion last season Newquay first team are now playing at level three of the Women’s pyramid.  At present the ladies are lying fourth in the league with just two defeats to date.

The girls have had to adapt to this higher level and add a more physical aspect to their game.  The amount of travelling also takes its toll with regular journeys in excess of 500 miles, meaning early starts and late returns.  However having purchased our own minibus during the close season, at least everyone can now travel together.

Also during the close season Newquay made three excellent signings, Candy Hopson from Cheltenham, Holly Sandow from Bath and Vicky White from Frome.  All have shown great commitment, never questioning the amount of travelling involved or looking for any financial reward.  All three have settled in well and are a great asset to the team.

With 12 players in the Cornwall squad of 18 (leading their group at the moment) the club goes from strength to strength and are a credit to themselves, Newquay and Cornwall.

The young Reserves development squad also gained promotion last season and, at present, lead Cornwall Division I.  This very young side is improving all the time.  A number of the team have moved up from last year’s under 14s and although they are competing against much older players, they show no fear and let their football do the talking.

Of the young players who have come into the side, a special mention for Amber Grose.  This girl has got everything – confident, fearless and all the tricks of the trade – should go all the way.

Although the girls come from all over the county the team spirit is second to none.  Given another season a number of these girls will certainly be pushing for first team football, which can only be good for the long term future of the club.

The junior section is also going exceptionally well with over 100 youngsters (some as young as five) attending training sessions.

Teams start at under 10 and go right through to senior level.  These teams are all doing well in their respective leagues and the way they look up to their senior sides shows a positive attitude in girls so young.

The youngsters also do a tremendous job on the fundraising side, an integral part of any  club.

We thank all the parents who ferry them around the County – without their help the club would not be able to function in the manner it is committed to, which is to make all aspects free so that no one is omitted for financial reasons.

Finally we would like to wish all our Sponsors and Supporters a Merry Christmas and a Happy and Prosperous New Year.  Keep on supporting, it is very much appreciated by everyone at the club.

                                                      John Hawkey

LADIES WIN EASILY OVER OXFORD 8 - 2

Sun, 11 Dec 2005

Newquay made their 530 mile round trip to the mighty Oxford United and returned to Cornwall with 3 points.

On a flat pitch, suiting smooth football Newquay took the lead on 10 minutes, Candy Hopson released from midfield and coolly rounded the keeper.  Newquay then extended their lead to 2 in the 25th minute, an excellent move involving 8 passes was clinically finished by Dawna Dennett.

Oxford then hit back with a superb free kick by their number 8 which was just beyond the outstretched fingers of Carley Barber.  This was followed up by an equaliser on the stroke of half time to make it 2-2.

The second half began with Newquay moving the ball with power and accuracy which Oxford found hard to handle.  The third goal came with the arrival of super sub Holly Sandow, a cross from Annie Richards was met first time by Sandow on 70 minutes.

Newquay were becoming unplayable as the ball was moved exquisitely over the pitch. Moves involving eight to ten passes were put together with Oxford not getting a touch.  Another 5 goals were run in and the post and bar were rattled, Jodie Botterill and Holly Sandow completing their hat tricks.

This was by far the best performance of the season, from back to front the team were outstanding! Hopefully now with Newquay in full flow and in all cup competitions and in contention for the league, on this form they will be a handful for any team in the new year.

When you consider the mileage and commitment the Newquay girls put in and the professional organisations they play against they are a credit to the town and county they represent.

Their last home game was 13th November, next home game 15th January with hundreds of miles of travel in between.  Also at Newquay are another six ladies teams following in the first team’s footsteps from under 10's all the way through to the senior level.

So, if there are any budding Davina Beckhams out there or Christine Ronaldos please phone Peter on 01637 872851 or Chris on 01637 8503242,  No subs or joining fees are charged as the club is a registered charity.  We just want to give football as a gift and not something you should pay for.

We are all very excited about the future and it looks as if there is an exciting new year in prospect at Newquay ladies. Player of the match - Hayley Stroud.    By Peter Butterly.

F.A. WOMEN'S CUP, 2nd Round  Newquay-1; Keynsham-5

Sunday, 13 Nov 05

Keynsham came flying out of the blocks and pinned Newquay back in their own half, restricting the home sie to rare breakaways.  Newquay were working hard to get themselves into the match but with little success.

With half time approaching it looked as if Keynsham would have nothing to show for all their possession but in the 45th minute the ball came back off the crossbar from a corner and was bundled over the line from close range.

Worse was to follow in the fourth minute of injury time when the visitors doubled their lead. The second half was just three mintues old when Keynsham virtually wrapped the game up when a great strike from wide on the left flew high into the net.  The visitors continued to look dangerous and two further goals gave them a 5-0 lead.

With 20 minutes to go Newquay got a consolation goal through a powerful header from Holly Sandow.  Newquay then enjoyed their best spell and with a little more luck, could have added to their score.  A long range effort from Vicky White scraped the outside of the post and a screamer of a free kick from Annie Richards, 25 yards out, cannoned off the bar.

Keynsham looked by far the best side Newquay have played this season and on this form, look certainties for promotion, fully deserving their victory.   by John Hawkey

NEWQUAY DROPS FIRST LEAGUE GAME to QUEENS PARK RANGERS 2-3.

30 Oct 05

League favourites Queens Park Rangers left a windswept Mt Wise with all 3 points after what was an excellent game and a great advert for womens football. Q.P.R put Newquay under pressure from the off and opened the scoring in the10th minute.  With the wind at their backs Q.P.R were camped in Newquay’s half for long periods but the home defence were coping well in frustrating their opponents.  Seven minutes before the break Newquay struck back through Holly Sandow who hit a tremendous shot from 30 yards which flew high into the net, to send the sides in all square at the break.

Newquay had the ideal start to the second half taking the lead after just 4 minutes, Dawna Dennett’s long range effort hit the underside of the bar before Sandow was quickest to react to prod the ball over the line.  Newquay now had their best spell pushing the visitors back and looking likely to increase their lead.  In a rare second half breakaway Q.P.R capitalised on a rare mistake in the home defence to level the scores.

Worse was to follow 10 minutes later when the visitors scored what proved to be the winner, once again after some poor defending. A case of what could have been, at 2-1-up Newquay were in the driving seat but failed to push home their advantage and were made to pay by a side that were all comfortably on the ball, had a great work ethic, and are getting professional coaching being under the umbrella of a professional club.

NEWQUAY LADIES WIN OVER TEAM BATH 5-3 in F.A. CUP ROUND

Disaster struck after 48 seconds when a cross from the Bath left wing found the Newquay defence still asleep after a goal mouth scramble, the ball finally fell to Kate Bagle the Bath striker who was left with the simple task of putting Bath in front. This also gave Team Baths confidence a boost and with the benefit of 5 days a week training sessions were giving the Newquay defence the run around. The Newquay midfield of Candy Hopson & Janine Butterly started to get some strong challenges in and started to push Newquay further up the park. Emma Pritchard on the Newquay right wing started to get in some great crosses which were causing Team Bath defence problems. The equaliser came from a neat through ball from Vicky White who found Jodie Botterill on the left wing who skillfully passed the Bath full back to square the ball to Dawna Dennett who showed great composure to slot the ball home from close range. With the game now going from end to end, the crowds were watching one of the best games of the season. After 33 minutes. Team Bath again took the lead from a low cross which was not dealt with by Newquay and a deflected shot trickled over the line. Half time came with Team Bath leading 2 - 1.

Following half time Newquay came out looking exit from the FA Cup in the eye! But in the 1st min. the score was again level, a great sole run by Holly Sandow ended in the Team Bath net. .... Game on! Newquay were now piling on pressure and finally took the lead, another great corner from Emma Pritchard found Holly Sandow to bullet an unsavable header into the net much to the delight of the home supporters. Another goal followed after 65minutes when a ball from Laura Wesley found Janine Butterly who slipped the ball into the path of Candy Hopkin who met it 1st time and blasted it into the roof of the net, this should have been game over, but on 70 minutes. Team Bath in one of their breakaways moved the ball onto Nicola Dorey who fired home from 15yrds. This made the last 20 minutes a little less comfortable. Lisa Hegarty and Leanne Griffiths in commanding form at the heart of the Newquay defence gave keeper Carley Barber very little to do. Finally on 89 minutes, Newquay made it safe, a swift interchange between strikers Dennett and Sandow released Sandow to round the Keeper to complete her Hat-trick and another fine day in the office for this strong Newquay team. Who knows how far they will travel in this years Cup!

LADIES TAKE PLYMOUTH ARGYLE 4-0 on 9 OCT 05

After their 6-1 demolition of Swindon Town last week, the Newquay Ladies continued their excellent form against Plymouth Argyle, in a very physical match with 3 yellow cards inside the first 30 minutes.  Newquay gradually started to get on top.  With the midfield duo of Candy Hopkins and Janine Butterly winning more and more possession, it was only a matter of time for Newquay to convert their chances.

The first goal came on the 35th minute when a great through ball from Laura Wensley found Holly Sandow in the outside channel going past the full back, firing in a great cross to be met first time by Annie Richards to put Newquay 1 up.  Five minutes later Annie turned provider with a terrific cross, met at the near post by Dawna Dennett.

The second half started with Newquay moving into overdrive and with Lisa Hegarty and Leanne Griffith in commanding form at the centre of defence, goalkeeper Carly Barber was having an easy day.

The game was put beyond Plymouth in the 62nd minute when a short corner from Vicky White to Leanne Griffith found Dawna Dennett to coolly slot home from close range.  With Plymouth being forced back, Newquay’s front three of Holly Sandow, Dawna Dennett and Jodie Botterill were giving the home defence a torrid time with only the woodwork and good goalkeeping saving Plymouth from further agony.

With the introduction of 15-year-old Kim Eke and 17-year-old Emma Pritchard, the torment continued with crosses coming from both wings.  A fourth goal was sure to come. A fabulous set piece move from the training ground saw Dawna Dennett bullet an un-saveable header into the top corner to complete her hatrick.

With Newquay now playing sexy football, it was a pleasure to watch.  Newquay Ladies are now 2nd in the league and starting to hit top form in the company of Queens Park Ranger, Swindon Town, Luton Town, Plymouth Argyle, Oxford City – all clubs attached to pro clubs, Newquay continue to hold their own and fly the flag for Cornish Ladies football.  By Peter Butterly.

LADIES WIN BIG OVER SWINDON TOWN 6-1 AT HOME 2 Oct 05

After sustaining injuries the previous week Newquay reshuffled the pack which brought a performance second to none.  Newquay started well against a very organised unit and were on the score card in the third minute with a well taken goal by Holly Sandow.

Seven minutes later Sandow struck again with a fierce drive which gave the keeper no chance. Newquay controlled the game with good defending and brisk passing and consequently, a third goal arrived courtesy of Jodie Botterill who unleashed a right foot shot which left the keeper in her stance.

Undeterred by the early goals inflicted on them, Swindon hit back with a goal from a mix up in the Newquay defence which left the Swindon team with a glimmer of hope. At this point in the game both sides were playing good football with two teams seeing good possession of the ball.

In the 55th minute, once again a move down the left saw Jody Botterill unleash a left foot strike which drifted towards the keeper and neatly planted itself in the back of the net. By this time Newquay were relishing their football and in the 62nd minute, Dawna Dennett broke through the heart of the defence and coolly drove home the fifth goal.

With Newquay now revelling in their ‘sexy football’ mode, upstepped the much improved Candy Hopson to calmly strike the ball past the advancing keeper and give Newquay a goal tally of six which, on the day, was thoroughly deserved.

Football was back with a vengeance, the quality and patience from the ladies was sheer class.  All credit must go to Swindon Town, a team of great stature, a team who battled to the end, a team which, unfortunately, met Newquay Ladies at their very best.  By Pete Armstrong

LADIES WIN OVER LUTON TOWN 3-2 AT HOME 4 Sep 05

Newquay faced an unknown team for their second league game of the season and looked to gain another three points. The game started extremely quickly as Luton made a breakthrough on goal within 20 seconds, but keeper Carley Barber was quick off her line and blocked the shot. Newquay thought that they had avoided an early goal but Luton forced another breakthrough leading to a challenge in the penalty area that resulted in a penalty kick. Luton's Stacey Connell stepped up to take it and fired it into the net to make the scoreline 1-0 in under a minute. Newquay's frustration continued throughout the first half as Luton tried their best to break up the game with needless injury breaks meaning Newquay were unable to find their rhythm. Jess Longworth and Lisa Hegarty had to work hard in defence and made some crucial tackles so that Luton didn't double their lead. Newquay definitely looked the more creative side and finally after 37 minutes, they found an equaliser.

After some nice football from Candy Hopson, she released the ball to Annie Richards who stormed up the right wing to cross the ball into a busy box, finding Dawna Dennett who fired into the back of the net.

Newquay tried to maintain momentum until half time but a dubious free kick decision caught Newquay unaware. After the kick had to be retaken, Luton were lucky enough to get a deflection as Faye Howell curled the ball into the net.

In the second half, Newquay realised that they needed to push the ball around more and make more solid attempts on goal. Hayley Stroud worked hard from the whistle reaching the ball first, every time and making some significant head clearances. Emma Pritchard was also playing some excellent football and eventually her persistency paid off as she crossed a perfect ball into the box which Holly Sandow hit on the volley as she screamed the ball into the back of the net. Now that Newquay were on level terms they were even more determined to find the winner. Their morale was growing and the whole ground was itching for a third goal. It eventually came, and the crowd couldn't have asked for a more amazing spectacle. Dawna Dennett picked up what seemed to be a dead ball in the Newquay half and edged her way past the Luton midfield. As the Newquay midfield edged out to the wing, the Luton defence opened up a space which Dennett weaved into. She continued running until she was able to see the goal and leaned back to hit an awesome 30 yard shot which lifted over the keeper into the back of the net.

Newquay had the lead for the first time and were desperate to hold onto it. The rest of the second half seemed to go on for ever and the referees decision to play on and add 12 minutes didn't help but Newquay battled hard and eventually the final whistle went.

NEWQUAY LADIES TAKE OXFORD CITY 3-1 IN FIRST LEAGUE MATCH OF 2006 SEASON,  21 Aug 05
After some excellent pre-season friendlies, Newquay went into their opening game of the season with great confidence.
Oxford had travelled down on Sunday morning and Newquay hoped to take advantage.
Newquay started well playing some nice passing football which
Oxford were unable to intercept. Candy Hopson was showing great talent in midfield and played well with Carla Ward to try and knock a ball over to the forwards Dawna Dennett and Holly Sandow. For the majority of the first half, Newquay were putting pressure on the goal and always seemed like scoring first. Leanne Griffiths made some excellent runs up the left wing linking up with Vicky White to pass the ball around the Oxford defence. A Griffiths' cross was unfortunate not to be finished as it just trickled past the goal-mouth, but it proved that Newquay were keen to put their mark on the game. Oxford tried to break down the Newquay momentum but never seemed to much of a threat in the first half and didn't produce any clean shots on goal. It only took Newquay 14 minutes to open the scoring as Annie Richards stormed down the right to cross the ball into the middle which led to a scramble in the box that Holly Sandow tapped into the back of the net to make it 1-0.
Right from the restart Newquay continued to chase down every ball preventing and
Oxford breakthrough. Janine Butterly was strong in defence and blocked all crosses coming in from the right hand side. Butterly and Richards played well together down the right and their perseverance eventually led to the second goal as another Richards cross reached Sandow who controlled the ball superbly and fired it into the back to score her second of the game.
Newquay came out after half time with great confidence and hoped that they could extend their lead early but
Oxford had other ideas, and were a lot stronger throughout the second half. Oxford began to work as a unit forcing Newquay to defend well. Lisa Hegarty made some vital challenges to stop the Oxford strikers breaking through and Jess Longworth had and Charlotte Gurr.
Arsenal continued to pressure the back line, but again the Newquay defence prevailed as Leanne Griffith and Lisa Hegarty were solid and anticipated the crosses excellently to clear the ball from the danger area.
After some nice football from both sides, Dennett managed to get a break-through onto goal. The keeper charged her down but she impressively won the ball and just managed to tap the ball into the net before going to the ground. This was a huge achievement for the team, to even score against the best team in
England was amazing, let alone equalise.
But Arsenal responded quickly creating a number chances but Newquay's young goalkeeper, Carley Barber, made some outstanding saves ensuring that the ball didn’t hit the back of the net. As the game reached its final stages, Laura Wensley and Hayley Stroud had to remain patient but dealt with the on-coming wingers well, clearing the ball to which Emma Pritchard controlled well and released to the front two.
As the final whistle went, Newquay celebrated an impressive draw. Arsenal were always the obvious favourites but the Newquay girls worked extremely hard to ensure that they didn’t suffer a loss. New signing Holly Sandow and Vicky White both had great games had proved that they will be a tremendous asset to the team in the new season.
A huge thanks goes to the crowd who showed up to support our girls. Over 1800 watched the match and the whole team thank you for your support.another strong game continually working hard making significant tackles. However
Oxford eventually broke through, and won a one on one with keeper Carley Barber to make the score 2-1. Oxford now had an adrenaline rush and believed that they deserved and an equaliser forcing Newquay to work at an even higher standard. Newquay began to slip slightly, but knew that they needed another goal the ensure victory. After a long second half, the third goal came 5 minutes from time as Emma Pritchard weaved between the defence to cross the Ball onto wards head who floated it into the far corner to make the final score 3-1.
Although the second half wasn't Newquay best performance, they grinded the result well and can reflect on the fisrt half with great confidence for the season ahead.

LADIES DRAW AGAINST ARSENAL 1-1 at HOME, 22 July 05

This hugely anticipated game started well for the home side, and right from the beginning Newquay let the English champions know that this wasn’t going to be easy.
Newquay were passing well and contended for every ball, leaving little room for Arsenal to break through. However, Arsenal began to play some quality football and just 10 minutes into the game a Ciara Grant cross misled the Newquay defence allowing Sian Larkin to slot the ball from close range into the back of the net.
Newquay wouldn’t allow their heads to drop and straight from the restart Captain Janine Butterly and Annie Richards kept the team's spirits high and led by example, making every tackle and moving well around the pitch.
The game was proving to be highly entertaining and there was hardly any difference between the two teams. Carla Ward, had received an early injury but it hardly effected her game as she chased down every ball matching Arsenal Captain, Jayne Ludlow, releasing the ball to Newquay strikers Jane Hurley and Dawna Dennett, who were unlucky not to convert their chances.
Newquay's best chance of the first half came from Candy Hobson. After making some excellent moves she hit a superb long-range shot which lifted over Arsenal keeper Emma Byrnes only to hit the crossbar. This gave Newquay confidence going in at half time, knowing that they had the ability and strengths to get the equaliser.
In the second half Arsenal stepped up a gear and began to outpace the Newquay defence. But Jess Longworth, who was awesome throughout the whole match giving one of her best performances, didn’t put a foot wrong and prevented any on coming attack from Arsenal strikers Lisa Burrows
