Newquay Ladies  6 vs 0 Forest Green Ladies

Sunday 20th May 2007

Another Sunday, another 3 points and another big club put to the sword.  Newquay Ladies signed off the latest part of their amazing journey by defeating Forest Green Rovers 6-0.  Goals by Helen Wood, a Laura Wensley 30-yard special, and a brace each from Dawna Dennett and Annie Richards saw off a spirited Forest Green challenge.  This was Newquay’s last game in their remarkable season.  Newquay have left big city clubs QPR, Plymouth Argyle, Swindon Town and Luton Town all trailing in their wake to take the South West Championship trophy.

They now are in the ladies national league.  This league is for the 30 top clubs in Britain.  Not bad for a team from Cornwall; but with success comes the cost.  The AGM of the league is in the Riodor Stadium, home of Coventry City FC.  In the 1st round of the Cup they could be drawn away to Sunderland or Newcastle Utd so the price of success is very high.  Maybe, without local help or a major backer the journey may not be able to continue, as at present the ladies are a stand-alone club with no support from any main sponsors.  They have the backing and free use of Newquay football club for which they are grateful but no financial backing, so unless help comes along this journey may hit the rocks.  It would be a great shame for the town and Cornish football as this is the first and perhaps the last chance to bring national football to the County.   If there are any interested backers or sponsors, please contact the club Secretary John Hawkey on 01637 871884.

Newquay Ladies  0  vs  2  Luton Town Ladies

Sunday 13th May 07

Newquay’s promotion celebrations came to an abrupt halt at Mount Wise on Sunday, when they were well beaten by a well-organised Luton Town team.  Newquay were without the influential Leanne Lapham, who suffered a broken leg during the County Cup final against Truro on Wednesday, Candy Hopson and Holly Sandow and with Vicky White and Katie Barker having to play out of position, Newquay were always going to find it difficult.  However they were well below par and gave their worst performance for a long, long time – conceding an excellent 100% win record at home this season, and also failing to score for the first time.

The game started at a frantic pace, with Luton showing that they were not prepared to act as cannon fodder for the League Champions.  They dominated midfield and were too strong and quick for the Newquay strikers Wood and Barker.  Luton deservedly went ahead on 25 minutes when a through ball caught Newquay square at the back and the Luton striker beat the advancing keeper Sally Thompson easily.  Newquay responded but could only muster a few long-range efforts from Wood and Barker.  Strangely out of sorts, all over the pitch, Newquay and the management team were happy to hear the half time whistle.

The second half began just as the first did, with Luton looking the far better team in every department of the game.  Lack of quality service to the strikers was a major problem for Newquay and its fair to say that neither Wood nor Barker had a clear chance between them.  Luton who had formed a guard of honour to applaud Newquay on the pitch before kick-off, looked more and more dangerous as the game went on.  It was no surprise when after another defensive lapse they went 0-2 up.  Sub goalie Emma Robinson was caught out of position and the Luton player volleyed home.

This was a disappointing day for Newquay, but they have the chance to finish the season on a high next Sunday when Forest Green Rovers visit Mount Wise.  Kick Off is 2pm.

Newquay Ladies 3 Swindon Town 0

Newquay ladies are now one game away from promotion to the national premier league following Sundays 3-0 win over Swindon Town at Mount Wise.  A win at home to Forest Green next Sunday will see Newquay Ladies crowned champions of the Southwest Combination League.

Playing on a hard bumpy pitch, Newquay started brightly.  Swindon, one of only two teams to have beaten Newquay this season, were finding it hard to cope with the pace and aggression of Candy Hopson in midfield and Wood and Lapham up front.

Not surprisingly, Newquay went in front when Helen Wood headed home a Leanne Griffiths cross.  Newquay now had their tails up and pushed forward at every opportunity.  Swindon looked good in midfield and dangerous up front but they were held comfortably by the Newquay defence.  A good challenge from Jess Longworth prevented a shot on goal and soon Lisa Hegarty was on the spot to clear another attack.  On the half hour mark, Newquay made it 2-0 when, following good inter-passing, Dawna Dennett rifled home from 18 yards to record her 18th goal of the season.  At the half break Newquay looked comfortable.  At the start of the 2nd half Swindon upped the pace a little and they started to cause a few problems.  Newquay sat back and seemed to be content with a 2-0 lead but two subs changed things.  Kirsty Lang coming on for Annie Richards and Vicky White for the impressive Hayley Stroud.  After 75 minutes the substitutions paid off when, after a goalmouth scramble, Kirsty Lang scored her first league goal.  She calmly finished in to the corner to the delight of her team mates and the bench.

Newquay then played the game out well satisfied with the 3-0 win.  Rivals Plymouth Argyle also won which means Newquay need to beat Forest Green next Sunday to lift the championship and bring national football to Cornwall for first time.  So, hopefully a good support will cheer the girls to a historic window at Mount Wise at 2:00pm Sunday.

Stroud, Heggarty, Longworth, Griffiths, Richards, Dennett, Hopson, Wensley, Lapham, Wood, White , Lange.

Forest Green Ladies Vs Newquay Ladies FC

Sunday 15th April 2007

Newquay Ladies continued their march to the League Championship with a comfortable 3-1 victory away to Forest Green Rovers.

The weekend began in spectacular fashion when a tyre blew out on the team mini bus, near Clevedon on the M5.  Shaken but not stirred, the team continued their journey to Strand.

The game started with Newquay on the attack, and for the first 10 minutes Forest Green struggled to get out of their own half.  The game was played in temperatures of 75° but that didn’t slow the Newquay girls.  The lively Leanne Lapham and Helen Wood were a constant threat and on 30 minutes the pair combined when Lapham crossed from the right flank for Wood to slot home.

Forest Green edged into the game and should have scored when Phillipa Helliwell, a Newquay transfer target, had her shot brilliantly saved at point blank range by Sally Thompson.  At half time Newquay led by 1-0.

The second half started with Forest Green Rovers looking sharper and another great save from Thompson kept Newquay in front.  Then, following another breakaway Lapham lashed home a great volley from 20 yards to give Newquay a 2-0 lead.  Shortly after another fine save from Thompson thwarted Forest Green.  However, from a corner to the home side, Emma Chitterbuck rose unchallenged to head home and put Forest back in the game.  But this was short-lived when Dawna Dennett crashed home a 25 yarder to put Newquay 3-1 up.  The referee then called a halt to the game for a drink break owing to the heat.  Newquay with a bare eleven players, and two of those unfit, fought hard for the victory.  They are now only two games away from promotion.

Next Sunday at Mount Wise, Newquay are host to Swindon Town.  Swindon are only one of two teams to have beaten Newquay this season, so the girls will be up for the game.

Clevedon 0 Newquay Ladies 5

Sunday, 8th April 2007

Newquay Ladies moved a step closer to the league championship and promotion with an emphatic 5-0 away win at Clevedon Town.  Newquay started at a tremendous pace and after only 2 minutes went 1-0 up when the lively Helen Wood broke down the left.  Beating the fullback, she pulled the ball back to Leanne Lapham who calmly slotted home from 8 yards.  Two minutes later, the rampant ladies went 2-0 up when Lapham returned the favour to Wood to score with an excellent strike.  Clevedon had no answer to the Newquay bombardment and were then rocked by an injury to the league’s leading goalscorer, Laura Bray, who had to leave the field. The break in play caused by the injury had a bad effect on the Newquay players and they took their foot off the accelerator; despite all the possession, they could not muster another chance and went in to the break 2-0 up.

After a few harsh words from the Newquay managers at half time things began to improve again. Following a corner from Lianne Griffiths, Newquay went 3-0 up as Helen Wood headed home from close range.  They continued to dominate and went 4-0 up as Lapham scored her second of the game.  The Clevedon defence were now under siege and the fifth goal came when the impressive Lapham fired home her third from the edge of the box. Wood should then have completed her hat trick but headed on to the bar when well placed.  Lapham also hit the bar as other chances were missed.  Throughout the game the Newquay defence, well marshalled by Lisa Hegarty and Laura Wensley continued their impressive recent form.  Keeper Sally Thompson had only one save to make in the entire match.

Newquay have only four games to play, three of those at home, and are hot favourites to bring premier league football to Cornwall for the first time.  Next week they travel to Forest Green for their final away game of the season.

The weekend was ruined somewhat when news came through that the changing rooms at the club’s training ground at Colan was burnt down, seemingly by mindless vandals.  Anyone with any information regarding the fire should contact the police.

The reserves also had an excellent win at Poole Town; coming out at 7-3 winners after trailing 3 times.

Newquay Ladies 2 vs Queens Park Rangers 1

Sunday 1st April 2007

With a crowd of over 300 giving great support, Newquay started a little nervously, allowing the London Club to take early control.  On 15 minutes, it looked like QPR had taken the lead but Emma Robertson in the Newquay goal was very alert to push the shot over the bar.  The two in Newquay’s midfield, Dawna Dennett and Candy Hopson, were battling to keep the rampant QPR at bay.  Then on 35 minutes, the referee’s decision possibly changed the course of the game.  A long throw from Amy Murphy landed at the QPR striker Danielle Ritchards.  She then back headed the ball over the outstretched arms of Robinson and into the Newquay net, to wild delight on the away bench.  But it quickly turned to dismay when the referee Gary Cornish disallowed the goal for a push.  This seemed to waken up the lethargic Newquay team and at last they gave the home support something to cheer for.  First Helen Wood linked up with Leanne Lapham but the snap shot narrowly went over the bar.  Then the QPR keeper had to be quick off the line to deny Lapham.  Half time came as Hegarty and Longworth at the heart of the defence received a standing ovation.

A half time pep talk and tactical tinkering seemed to work as within minutes a great cross from Katie barker was met by Annie Richards, her first time shot skimmed the bar.  Then on 50 mins Leanne Griffiths overlapped and cut inside where she slipped a superb ball to Lapham who stepped over the ball to wrong foot the full back who clattered her for a certain penalty. Up stepped Helen wood and with everyone feeling the pressure she calmly made it 1-0 to Newquay. Now with the girls starting to show the power they were capable of as they put QPR on the back foot. On 60 minutes a long through ball found Laura wensley who found lappam in space to coolly round the centre half and prodded home to make it 2-0 much to the delight of the home support.

With national football getting ever closer, two sloppy tackles by a faltless Newquay defence allowed QPR back in to the game and in the last 5 minutes, as nerves and tempers started to fray, the opposition manager was sent off & 3 yellow cards appeared but to jubilant scenes the final whistle sounded like heaven as the far travelled Newquay ladies celebrated with their fans.

This was a great victory over the big city rivals which put Newquay on top of the table with just 5 games to go: 2 away and 3 home.  Its now very close to the title and they can nearly touch it.

They now travel next week to Clevedon knowing they can only use the old football mantre, take one game at a time, but injuries and luck permitting national league football is looking very close.

Team: Robertson, Griffith, Wensley, Heggarty, Longworth, Richards, Hopkin, Dennett, Barker, Lappam, Wood, Lange, Butterly, White.

Chesham Ladies  0 vs.  Newquay Ladies  4  (18 Mar 07)

Another Long trip for Newquay Ladies FC took them on a 570 mile round trip to Chesham aiming to pick up another 3 points. With Chesham’s team form at the moment, this was always going to be Newquay’s toughest away game. However instead of their usual slow start, Newquay came out of the starting gate at full speed and scored two goals within ten minutes. A delicate through ball from Dennett set up Woods who chipped the keeper, next a build up on the left involving Griffith and Lang found Dennett free to thunder home a goal into the top corner.  After playing as stand in keeper last week, Dennett showed her versatility by joining Candy Hopkins in the mid field.  Chesham started to collapse like a flat pack wardrobe as Newquays mid field became dominant.  The third goal came in the 35th minute after a challenge on Richards gave Newquay a free kick on the edge of the box. Candy Hopkins powered the ball into the back of the net.  No swerve.  No curl.  Just pure power. Newquay’s pairing of Longworth and Hegarty were in complete control at the back, which provided comfort for the Ladies to turn in a great performance.  The second half saw Newquay continue to push forward, and the Chesham keeper Lucia Marsella had to be on top form to keep out shots by Lappen, Barker and Wensley.  Dennett got on the end of Richards Cross to make it goal number 4 to Newquay.  A fifth goal came from Annie Richards after passing two defenders she unleashed a great shot but it was just on the whistle for full time so did not count.  How the ref can blow as the ball is crossing the line is a mystery only Scooby Doo could solve.  Before kick off the Newquay management team would have secretly settled for a draw given Chesham’s form. This result however was possibly the best of Newquays very exciting season.  Emma Robinson in the Newquay goal is gaining more confidence and the pace of new strikers Wood and Lappen has enhanced this season’s very strong team of players.

Now, with 6 games to go Newquay are at the top of the league by two points. The Ladies will be playing at home next week against Swindon Town.   Newquay have played amazingly well against bigger clubs in bigger populations areas with large home support, so why not go along to Mount Wise and give them the girls the support they deserve.  Kick off is at 2pm @ Mount Wise, Sunday 25th March 07.

Oxford Vs Newquay Ladies

Sunday 11th March 07

Newquay had to reshuffle their pack with injuries and unavailability’s.  Dawna Dennett was the hero donning the Keepers gloves with distinction.  Unfortunately however, inside 5 minutes, a 30yard shot from Hannah Shye flew into the Newquay net.  1 nil down.  This was a wake up call if you want to win the Championship.  The sleeves had to be rolled up, and Newquay responded in great style playing the best football of their season.  The following 20 minutes saw Helen Wood score 3 goals.  For her hatrick, she picked up the ball on the wing, cut in across the box, past two defenders and drilled a low shot into the bottom corner.  Oxford looked shell-shocked.  The half time whistle could not come quick enough for Oxford Manager to re-group his troops.  5 minutes into the second half saw Newquay’s influential Sarah Stainer suffering a bad knee injury and had to be carried off, who was replaced by Vicky White – making her first appearance of the season through injury.  On 55 minutes, Leanne Lapham slipped a delicate pass to Annie Richards who chipped the ball up and volleyed a screamer into the top corner of the Oxford goal from all of 30yards.  This gave her a blast of confidence; meanwhile Kirsty Lang on the opposite wing was playing her best game in a Newquay strip.  More goals were on the cards.  Helen Wood and Leanne Lapham up the front were giving the Oxford back four a torrid time.  With 15 minutes to go, good play from Candy Hopkin and Leanne Griffiths again released the on-fire Richards to shoot home from 20yards this time.  With Lisa Hegarty and Jess Longworth being allowed freedom to move into the midfield area, confident play could have seen Newquay score more but for great goal keeping by Oxford.  But with 5 minutes left, Lapham grabbed her first and deserved Newquay goal.  Her fantastic pace saw her outstrip the Oxford defence and coolly finish after a great through ball from Laura Wensley to make it 6.

Newquay next week are on their travels again to meet the inform Chesham United up near High Wycombe.  But this is the price they pay for their success.  With 7 games to go and their showdown with QPR scheduled for 1st April, things are looking hopeful for a return to fitness for Kelly Hall and Holly Sandow with an exciting end to the season on offer.

More points for Newquay Ladies! (Sun, 11 Feb 07)

Newquay Ladies 5 – 1 Frome Town

Newquay Ladies continued their quest for the Southwest Combination title with an emphatic 5-1 win over Frome Town on Sunday at St. Columb Minor, the game being switched from a waterlogged Mount Wise.

Frome who had knocked Newquay out of the FA Cup earlier this season , started brightly having a strong wind at their backs they took a deserved lead on 15 minutes when a fumble by goalkeeper Sally Thompson allowed striker Lianne Lapham to slot home. With the wind proving to be a huge advantage to Frome, Newquay were kept busy but the back four of Griffiths, Hegarty,  Longworth and Stroud were in superb form and coped comfortably with the Frome forwards.

Newquay, always a danger on the break equalised on 30 minutes when a free kick from Leanne Griffiths was met beautifully by the impressive Helen Wood who placed the ball past the Frome keeper with ease.  Newquay now took control with midfield Candy Hopson being unlucky when a tremendous shot from 25 yards brought a great save from the Frome keeper. The teams went in at half time, level at 1-1. Newquay started the second half at great pace and deservedly went ahead on 48 minutes when Helen Wood who was outstanding raced clear of Frome’s defence to finish beautifully into the far corner. Two minutes later Newquay went 3-1 up, when from a corner Dawna Dennett headed home powerfully . Newquay were now playing really well and Frome were finding it difficult to cope with the pace and power of the rampant Newquay side. The fourth goal came when Helen Wood raced clear again only to be brought down by the beleaguered centre half. Candy Hopson standing in for the injured Wood, crashes the ball in to make it 4-1. Newquay never left up for a minute and kept Frome under pressure for long periods the pace of Katie Barker and Annie Richards always a threat. The fifth goal came following another free kick for a foul on Helen Wood. Lisa Hegarty took the kick and her shot was too hot for the keeper who lost the ball and Dawna Dennett tapped the ball home Newquay hit the bar and squandered other chances but throughout this game they looked every bit, championship material.  With the back four now playing at top form they looked a very difficult side to play against. Next Sunday, Newquay have no game owing to Forest Green being involved in a county cup match, they now sit in 2nd place, 1 point behind leaders QPR who will visit Newquay later in the season, for what may be a championship decider.

Newquay Ladies 6   Plymouth Argyle 0          (7 Jan 07)

On a day of gale winds & heavy rain Newquay entertained local rivals

Plymouth Argyle with both teams in joint second place one point behind leaders QPR. It was always going to be a tense derby and with Newquay missing five first team players they were a little apprehensive facing the in form Plymouth team. After 4 minutes nerves were settled when a through ball played by Laura Wensley saw striker Dawna Dennett slide the ball past Argyle keeper Squires. This early goal seemed to deplete Argyle and they failed to fall back on a damage limitation exercise. Two over the top balls and one corner all dealt with confidently by deputy keeper Emma Robinson was all Argyle could muster as Newquay took a stanglehold on the game. With wingers Katie Baker and Annie Richards Supplying Eddles Cross crossed it was only time until Newquay added to their tally with neat interplay between strikers Dawna Dennett and her new striking partner Helen Wood, With Wood free to use her lightning pace to leave Plymouth centre half Katie Middleton for dead, round the keeper to score her first Newquay goal. Then ten minutes a short corner made an angle for Leanne Griffith to thunder a shot from 35 Yards hammered of the crossbar where Dawna Dennett headed home the rebound with great power. Half time came as relief for Plymouth. A three pass move started with Hayley Stroud to Candy Hopkin onto Katie Barker whose shot shaved the top of the cross bar. Five consecutive corners increased the pressure on the Plymouth Defence and from the fifth corner Leanne Griffith curled her shot into the top corner with Jess Longworth and Lisa Hegarty having an easy day in defence they then created problems at the other end on all set pieces. With half hour to go Newquay introduced the pace of Kirsty Lang to the mix within minutes she worked a one two with Woods and her powerful shot brought out the best in Plymouth Keeper as she finger tipped the ball past the post. On 70 Minutes Helen Wood Scored the goal of the match after a cross from the right wing found Helen on the edge of the box with 2 defenders on her side she managed to turn them, get the ball out of her feet and fire in an unstoppable shot into the top corner. A goal the brought the surprisingly large crowd on such a miserable day to their feet. With Newquay introducing young players Tamsin Keast and Lucy Old it did not alter the flow of the game and it was a Lucy Header handled on the line by a Plymouth Defender that gave Newquay a penalty. Normal taker Barker handed the ball to Wood to complete her hatrick and a dream debut for the Club. The Final Whistle must have sounded like heaven for the beleaguered Plymouth team. Plymouth must be hoping not to draw Newquay in the K.O Cup as the Three games this season total 14 goals to 2 in Newquays Favour. Plymouth keeper Clair Squires played well as was not at fault for the goals Centre backs Katie and Kate Middleton worked hard in defence. For Newquay a massive win in their chance to become the first team from the South West to win promotion to National League football.  With the coaching of Bernard McGiven and Moris Ford combined with managing skills of Pete Armstrong things are boiling up just nice. One point off the top with QPR the leaders still to play at Mount Wise every game is a cup final for the far travelling Newquay Ladies. Next up is a trip to Bournemouth where Three Points are a must. The Second team will be home to Keynsham Town in the ¼ Final of the Bristol Soccer world cup Sunday KO 2pm.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

No game this week but a win this week in the FA Cup will put us in the last 32 of the National Competition, so trip to Frome takes on historic proportions.  All our injuries are clearing up so we should be at full strength.

League wise, we are looking good! When the games in hand are played Newquay should be within 1 point of the lead and again national league football for first team from Cornwall to reach this level male or female.

The other 3 teams in contention are QPR, Swindon town and Plymouth argyle are all attached to pro clubs with all financial and facilities that go with it. So far Newquay ladies with no financial support and also 8 other junior teams to support the effort from the girls is all the more remarkable.  So for a little club from Cornwall who are a registered charity to compete with the big clubs is nothing short of amazing and with the 3 teams having to make the trip to Newquay I’m sure the girls will be relishing the games, things are certainly looking good at this stage.

Also second team are top of the south west regional league and this Sunday entertain Keynsham town in quarter final of the southwest cup. And with the section producing potential quality players these are exciting times making 2007 a big year for the Cornwall champions.

            Peter Butterly – Newquay Ladies

Cornwall County Cup 19 Nov 06

Torpoint  0; Newquay Ladies - 3

A depleted Newquay made up of 1st and 2nd team players held on for a 3 – 0 victory over Torpoint in this keenly contested county cup tie.  Newquay who only started the game with 9 players and striker Dawna Dennett in goal were taken all the way by a organised and spirited Torpoint side.  With Annie Richards and Katy Barker arriving 25 minutes into the game Newquay were forced to defend strongly.  However with Barker & Richards on the pitch Newquay began to take control and only 5 minutes after arriving Newquays inform winger Annie Richards stepped inside the full back to crash a great shot in to the far corner of the net.  Soon after the other late arrival Katy Barker beat the defence for pace to put Newquay 2 – 0 up.

Torpoint never gave up and continued to pass the ball impressively and soon after the break were awarded a penalty.  This was well saved by Candy Hopson who had taken over from Dawna Dennett in goal.  Torpoint now began to toil and Newquay picked up the pressure only to miss clear-cut chances to extend the lead.  The Torpoint keeper Northey also made several top class saves notably from Dawna Dennett and Barker, centre half chamberlain also had an outstanding game for the classy Torpoint side.  Late on in the game the Newquay pressure eventually paid dividends when Barker scored to make it 3 – 0 to Newquay.  Player of the Match; Zara Northey (Torpoint Goalkeeper)  .

Next week a full Newquay side travel to Clevedon knowing nothing less than 3 points is acceptable as they are now only 1 point behind leaders QPR with them still to travel to Newquay.

FA Cup Match

Gloucester City 2; Newquay Ladies 4  (29 Oct 06)

Willy Nelsons hit 'On The Road Again' was the appropriate theme tune when Newquay travelled away for the fifth successive match this time a visit to Gloucester City. After 2 minutes Katie Barker put in a fierce cross which narrowly missed the post. Then on 15 Minutes Holly Sandown was sent through by Annie Richards, it looked as if Holly had gone too wide but somehow she managed to score from the tightest of angles. With Newquay Sensing Victory they pushed too far and were caught out by the pacy Kelly Aldridge to make it 1-1. Just on Half Time a cross from Helen Wood found Launa Stevens unmarked to tap home giving the hosts the lead. Newquay stated the second half well although Gloucester looked strong on the break. On the 65th Minute a good move from the Newquay defence starting with a pass from Jess Longworth to Lisa Hegarty who's long through found Katie Barker, time seemed to stand still as Katie Held her nerve and Riffled her shot into the bottom corner to the relish of the Newquay team. The FA Cup dream was alive again, Extra time was the last thing Newquay would have wanted but it ended up being very welcome. Rachel Finch and Emma Pritchard fitted in very well in their First team debuts. Ten minutes into extra time Pritchard delivered an inch perfect pass which was met on the volley by Sandon who's shot flew by the outstretched arms of Thompson to take Newquay into a 3-2 Lead. To Gloucester's credit they came back again and only a goal line clearance by Hayley Stroud and two good saves by Carley Barker kept Newquay ahead. With time running out Laura Wensley found Dawna Dennett on the right wing who took the ball forward passing the full back to cut in a cross to Sandon who's cool finish made sure of Newquays Progression to the next round of the FA Cup. Pete Armstrong Newquays manager is hoping for a home tie next round or the girls may need a map to find our home ground!

FA Cup 2nd Round – Sun 12 Nov 06

Newquay Ladies 4; Plymouth Argyle 0

If you like your Cup football with an edge then Newquay was the place for you on Sunday, as Newquay Ladies marched into the 3rd round of the FA Cup.  With a healthy crowd and TV cameras in the attendance, a nervy start was to be expected.  Inside 3 minutes, Sarah Stainer released the flying Katie Barker, who’s cross was met by Holly Sandow who sent the ball narrowly over the bar with her first effort.  Two minutes later, the same combination again but this time with the cross met by Annie Richards who drilled her shot into the bottom corner to give first blood to Newquay.  Plymouth lead a charmed life over the next twenty minutes as Newquay peppered the goal at will with Dennett, Hopson and Sandow all coming close.  Then on the half hour, Barker out strode the Plymouth defence and unleashed a thunderbolt from 20 yards, which nearly broke the crossbar.  Gradually, Plymouth started to get into the game and with Lewis and Perrett powering the midfield, they gained a bit of territorial advantage but found Newquay’s new keeper in commanding form.  Just on half time a free kick from Kay Lewis was met by the league’s top scorer Helen Kuker, who’s header was directed to the bottom corner of the Newquay goal.  The Plymouth support leapt for a goal but miraculously Sally Thompson dived to her right to tip the ball past the post with a save that kept Newquay in the lead at half time.

An eventful second half started with Newquay on top.  On fifty minutes, Sandow’s shot from 18 yards deceived Squires in the Plymouth goal to give Newquay a 2 – 0 lead.  Five minutes later and the match was made safe as Hopson headed home after a beautifully placed cross from Dennett in the area.  A 50/50 challenge in midfield between Hopson and Brooks saw both players booked.  At this stage of the match, with Newquay comfortable, Plymouth resorted to kicking the opposition instead of the ball and they found that Newquay were not in the mood to turn the other cheek, so the game became a physical battle with the ball taking a back seat.  Two Plymouth bookings followed.  Then, to rub salt into the wound, Dennet headed home on seventy minutes to make the score 4-0.  The next 15 minutes saw the Ref lose control as he dismissed Hopson for a 2nd yellow card, then Lisa Hegarty with a straight red.  Sub Chelsea Easton was hacked down in the 80th minute by Perrett of Argyle, only to be shown a yellow card in the melee after Newquay’s Jess Longworth was also sent off with 2 yellow cards for dissent.  Now, with only 8 players, Newquay were forced to defend but with subs Janine Butterly and Kirsty Lang working to close space, Plymouth still could not breach the Newquay rear guard.  At last the whistle sounded to halt activities.  I’m sure on reflection that referee Tucker will realise that football at conference level is very physical, and allowed to be.

Anyway, 8 Newquay players can look forward to step on the FA Cup trail but their heavy challenge may suffer by suspensions after some Graham Poll like decisions.  Next week the girls are at Torpoint.  The 2nd team will be at home to Holway.  Kick off there is 2pm.  Plymouth Argyle will be at home licking their wounds after a second defeat from their local rivals in one week in a very exciting game that had the lot.

Newquay Team:

Sally Thompson, Hayley Stroud, Jess Longworth, Lisa Hegarty, Laura Wensley, Annie Richards, Candy Hopson, Sarah Stainer, Katie Barker, Dawna Dennett, Holly Sandow. Subs:  Janine Butterly, Kirsty Lang, Chelsea Easton

Plymouth Argyle Team:

Claire Squires, Leah Mimms, Rhian Harries, Nikki Lake, Katie Hine, Kezia Fowler, Laura Perrett, Helen Kukor, Kay Lewis, Sam Blake, Leah Brooks, Rowena Price, Gemma Farley

Plymouth Argyle 2; Newquay Ladies 5 (4 Nov 06)

Newquay Started this vital top of the table clash against Argyle at a tremendous pace and in the second minute were unlucky when Annie Richards shot crashed off the post. Undeterred Newquay piled on the pressure and took a deserved lead on 10 minutes when Dawna Dennett placed the ball into the far corner of the Plymouth net, following a neat move involving Sandow and Richards. Within five minutes rampaging Newquay went 2-0 up when the impressive Annie Richards crashed in a great shot from 20 yards. Newquay, now looking like promotion candidates against top of the table Plymouth, took a 3-0 Lead on 20 minutes when Dennett headed past the Argyle keeper from a pinpoint cross from Katie Barker. Barker causing all sorts of problems for the Argyle defence was in outstanding form with her pacy runs down the right wing.

Argyle now put up a spirited fight back but never bothered Newquay keeper Carly Barber at all thanks to the impressive centre aback pairing of Jess Longworth and Lisa Hegarty. On 35 minutes Laura Wensley the consistence right back was yellow carded by an over officious referee who was having a poor game. Two Minutes after the booking Argyle pulled a goal back when a miss hit cross from the left slid over the hapless Barber in goal. Candy Hopson, Newquays powerhouse midfielder was then on the receiving end of the referees strange decisions, she was booked for a tame challenge in mid-field. Just before the half time break, Hopson had been on the end of a horrendous two-footed challenge in midfield, which unbelievably went unpunished.

Newquay went in at half time 3-1 up.

The second half started briskly with Argyle bravely pushing forward, but they were unable to break the sturdy Newquay defence until the 55th minute, Argyle got back into the game following unusually slack marking at the back. At 3-2 down Argyle pressed on but Newquay defended well and kept up the passing game that has served them so well this season. Then on 65 minutes the referees who had had a very poor game awarded Candy Hopson a second yellow card for a late tackle. Many teams may have crashed at this stage but not Newquay and not today. Down to 10 men incredibly Newquay not only weathered the storm but hit back strongly and went 4-2 up when Katie Barker coolly lobbed the Argyle keeper from the edge of the box. Then the eager Holly Sandon had a cross shot crash off the far post with the keeper beaten. Still not satisfied Newquay attacked again and again and on 80 minutes Holly Sandon got the goal she richly deserved when she stooped to head a Barker Cross past the Argyle keeper putting Newquay 5-2 ahead. Newquay held firm to the end, recording their best win of the season. The two teams meet again next Sunday at Mount Wise in the FA Cup where Newquay hope to repeat this form. Kick off 1pm come and give the girls the support they deserve in their first home game for 6 weeks and help continue the FA Cup Dream. Newquay at this form must have a very real chance for promotion to the National League.

Swindon 3; Newquay 2  Sun 22 Oct 06

The game started brightly enough with Newquay quickly getting into their smooth passing mode. On 8 minutes Newquay got the early goal their pressure deserved.  Newquay won a free kick on the edge of the Swindon box, which was lashed home by the inspirational Candy Hopson.  It should have been plain sailing now for the Cornish girls who continued to dominate.  5 minutes later, the game should have been made as the speedy Katie Barker’s shot rebounded off the post, hit the back of the keeper’s head, fell to a defender who’s clearance then ricochet off Sarah Stainer and hit the opposite post!  This summed up Newquays bad luck. On the half hour, in their first attack a doubtful decision by Ref Rob Desmond, who had an excellent match in the middle, gave Swindon a free kick and Michelle Rich made no mistake, giving Carly Barber in the Newquay goal no chance for the equaliser.  2 minutes later Barber was again beaten on her near post by Catherine Reid. 2 – 1 down.  It was surreal.  Swindon’s Kerry Keene headed a third just before the break following poor defending. The second half started with Newquay ‘all guns blazing’, attacks rained in on the Swindon goal with Both Annie Richards and Katie Barker bombarding the penalty area with pinpoint crosses.  But in the 58th minute, Michelle Rich grabbed her second of the game from the edge of the box. The Swindon defence rode their luck and held out till the 80th minute when Holly Sandow blasted the ball into the roof of the net after Dawna Dennett battled with the ball to feed Sandow.  Although Newquay got forward with wave after wave of attack, Swindon held out.  The day was not to be for Newquay, although a great performance did not receive the awards they deserved.  Newquay are away in the F.A Cup to Gloucester hoping for a good cup run.

County Cup – Sun 15 Oct 06

Camelford Ladies 0 – 10 Newquay Ladies

On a windswept Camelford pitch, both teams found it difficult to get the ball down and play.  The same settled Newquay, but this time with a mixture of 1st and 2nd team players, started to take control.  After 10 minutes, a cut back by Annie Richards found Candy Hopkins on the edge of the box who thundered in a shot to the top corner, which flew past Donna McCaully in the Camelford goal.  This posted a message that the home team were in for a torrid afternoon.  3 minutes later, a through ball from Janine Butterly found Katie Barker who used her pace to pass two defenders and score form an acute angle.  Another 3 minutes past and the game was out of sight for Camelford.  Barker, this time the provider, cut in from the wing to allow a tap in for Hopkins to make the score 0 – 3.  On 30 minutes, the influential Laura Wensley split the none defence allowing Hopkins an easy chance to round the keeper to complete her hatrick.  Camelford continued to defend with Marlon Syme and Kerrie Vosper outstanding.  On 40 minutes, a curling free kick from Sam Hollnell left Dawna Dennett in the Newquay goal beaten only for the cross bar to save the away side.  51 minutes passed and a fine run and finish from the ever-improving Kirsty Lang saw her first goal in a Newquay strip.  With half time looming, two more Newquay goals came in quick succession from Katie Barker, with her second of the match and a fourth for Hopkins.

The 2nd half started with Camelford having the wind at their back starting to ask questions of the Newquay back four.  But with Kelly Hall and Jess Longworth in commanding form chances were few to trouble Newquay.  With regular striker Dennett now released from goalkeeping duties by Hopkins, she soon found the net with a fine finish from 12 yards.  Katie Barker completed her hatrick before substitutes Jodie Smith and 2nd team top scorer Tamsin Keat joined in as cogs in a well-oiled machine.  At the final whistle, Newquay had bagged 10 goals but Camelford showed great resilience and commitment and never once did they stop competing against a very strong Newquay team.

Newquay now face a hectic month that could make or break their season , starting this week away to Swindon Town in the league, followed by the FA Cup away to Gloucester City, and then games against Plymouth Argyle and Queens Park Rangers.  Points from these games could see Newquay in pole position to be the first Cornish team male or female to play National League football. Newquay team:

Dawna Dennett, Lisa Hegarty, Jess Longworth, Hayley Stroud, Kirsty Lang, Kelly Hall, Janine Butterly, Candy Hopson, Annie Ritchards, Laura Wensley, Katie Barker. Subs: Jodie Smith, Tamsin Keat.

Newquay 2, Chesham United 1  (1 Oct 06)

In a match that saw both sides struggle to keep the ball down in gale force winds, Newquay capitalised on a territorial advantage to earn a crucial 2-1 win – reinforcing their South West Combination League promotion hopes. Newquay opened their account through Holly Sandow, who fired a shot past Chesham keeper Katie McGloin from the edge of the penalty area only 10 minutes into the game. Newquay continued to control the game, putting pressure on Chesham’s defence and creating a number of chances. First, Candy Hopson went close to extending their lead with a shot from 30 yards which grazed the upright, before Annie Richards blasted against the post and Katy Barker’s penalty was saved by McGloin. But Barker came back after the break in determined mood, threatening McGloin’s goal only two minutes into the second half with a shot that travelled inches wide of the post. Newquay’s next goal came on the 70-minute mark after a nasty collision of heads between Chesham’s Seun O’deniiji and Newquay’s new signing Sarah Strainer, which resulted in Newquay being awarded a free-kick. Leanne Griffiths’ subsequent delivery into the box found Dawna Dennett, who fired in a powerful header which left McGloin stranded and put Newquay 2-0 up and crusing. Griffiths nearly struck a second moments later, but was denied by the overworked McGloin.  The visitors then took control of possession and Chesham came close to opening their account through O’deniiji, who broke through Newquay’s defence only to be denied by an excellent save from Newquay goalkeeper Carley Barber.  The visitors kept up the pressure and in the 50th minute they pulled a goal back. Newquay responded immediately and nearly had a third goal through new signing Katie Barker, who picked up a ball on the wing and broke through Chesham’s defence – only to be denied by McGloin. With five minutes remaining Barker tried again to beat McGoin, however she collided with Chesham’s Leann Mcleann, and she was forced to go off injured. Barber was tested at the other end of the pitch late on by both Shantelle Woodward and Kate Bowers, but the visitors could not fashion an equaliser. After the match Newquay captain Lisa Hegarty said: “We are happy with the win – you can’t get better than that.  “I think we played quite well in the conditions, but gale force winds don’t help much. “We passed the ball around quite well and Sarah Strainer’s performance in midfield was outstanding, but we played much better last week. We are at home again on Sunday to Forest Green and this result has re-enforced our belief.  “This should be a great season because we’re playing well, our only hiccup was against QPR – but that was our fault and we know what went wrong.”

Newquay: Barber, Wensley, Griffiths, Longworth, Hegarty (capt); Hopkins, Strainer, Sandow, Dennett, Barker, Richards. Sub: White.

Queens Park Rangers-4; Newquay Ladies-1

After an even start, the home team Queens Park Rangers made the first breakaway that resulted in a goal, with centre forward Sharon Blackwood finishing well. Newquay Ladies responded immediately, adding pressure with a four pass move that ended in Holly Sandow scraping the cross bar.  A great tackle by Kelly Hall saved the Newquay Ladies from a further goal on 30 minutes.  5 minutes later, Newquay were punished for loose marking with Blackwood scoring her second.  On 40 minutes, Newquay were lifted by a superb goal from Annie Richards, cutting in from the left and firing home a great shot from the edge of the box.

With the second half just underway, defender Jess Longworth, in trying to clear an awkward bouncing ball, diverted it past Newquay keeper Carly Barber to make the score 3-1.  Then followed a period of sustained pressure by Newquay Ladies, with Holly Sandow missing an easy chance, they pushed forward and were unlucky not to score.  But Newquay were caught again on 80 minutes with another goal by Sharon Blackwood - completing her hatrick.  If Newquay Ladies had taken their chances, the score would have been much closer in a game that finished 4-1 to the home side.

Newquay-5; Frome-1  (27 Aug 06)

An injury hit Newquay squad made the long journey to Frome with a bit of trepidation in the air.  Frome is one of those places you like to get out of town as quick as possible with 3 points in the bag.

Early on Newquay started to put pressure on the Frome defence, and with new signing Sarah Stainer pulling the strings in midfield showing why she played professional football in Italy and Germany.  She always seemed to find space and have time on the ball.  Her persona inspired her midfield company Candy Hopkins to have her best game in a Newquay strip.

With territorial advantage, a goal was due to come…and what a goal it was.  A seven-pass move from Newquay ended with Annie Richards cutting the ball back to Dawna Dennett to blast home from the edge of the box.  Now with Jess Longworth and Kelly Hall in commanding form at the back, Carly Barber was having a quiet time in the Newquay goal.  Before the half time whistle Holly Sandow had twice hit the post.

Three minutes into the second half, a through ball from Hayley Stroud sent Katie Barker free on the wing and her cross was met by Holly Sandow to head home.  On 55 minutes the game was made safe by a solo Annie Richards goal, cutting inside the full back to score from 20 yards.  Next, as if not to be outdone by her fellow winger Katie Barker, released by Laura Wensley, flew by the Frome full back to fire across the keeper a fabulous goal.  On 70 minutes, Frome’s Sarah Moxey, on one of their few breakaways, managed to beat Barber at the near post.

With Newquay now introducing Kirsty Lang and 15year old Amber Groud. To proceeding the combined with only a great save by Frome keeper Travis denying Lang her first goal for the senior side.  Five minutes from time Dawna Dennett scored her second and Newquay’s fifth to put Newquay on top of the league.  Though early season, Newquay are looking better than last year when they finished 3rd.

Next Sunday 3-9-06 Newquay reserves start their League fixtures with a home game against Holway Utd Kick-off 2.00 pm.

Next game for first team 10th September: home to AFC Bournemouth..

Newquay 4 vs. Clevedon 2    (20 Aug 06)

Newquay made a positive start to the new season, and took the lead in the 4th minute when a pin-point cross from new signing Katy Barker picked out Holly Sandow, whose powerful header gave Gemma Baker in the Clevedon goal stranded.  Newquay continued to push forward but Baker was having an excellent game, and the score remained the same until 5 minutes before the break when Laura Bray latched on to a loose ball and hit her shot beyond Carley Barber low into the corner of the net.  Newquay’s response was immediate when another Barker cross was volleyed home by Annie Richards at the back post.  From the restart Candy Hopson won the ball back and fed the dangerous Barker out wide who used her tremendous pace to race down the flank before cutting in and dispatching her shot across the keeper and into the net.

The second half was just 3 minutes old when Leanne Griffiths jinxed her way in from the touch line and squeezed her shot past Baker at the near post.  Newquay were looking comfortable at this stage but hesitancy in the home defence allowed Bray to nip in for her second and bring Clevedon back into the match in the 56th minute.  The final half-hour became scrappy, but Baker in the visitors goal still had to be alert making good saves from both Sandow and Richards to prevent further goals.
