NEWQUAY LADIES 5, HOLMANS 4  (19 Nov 06)

Newquay Ladies U16 and Holmans met again in Camborne for the second straight week.  Newquay began this match by using the driving wind to advantage with right halfback Jenni Tew feeding striker Beth Pearce for two quick goals in the first five minutes of play.  Newquay continued to dominate most of the first half with Cat Kelly making two spectacular goals after working the ball single-handedly up from the middle to make it 4-0 Newquay before Holmans was able to get on the boards with a clean setup cross from the right to center goal.  Newquay ended the first half with one more to make the half-time score 5-2.

The second half was one of patient ball control by both sides.  Holmans, using the wind to their favor, dominated possession while Newquay dug in defensively.  Newquay, missing one striker and with another injured, was not able to put together a goal in the second half.  Holmans on the other hand, took advantage and pounded the Newquay keeper, Charlie Curnow, time and again.  Finally, Newquay’s defense began to crack and Holmans capitalized with two scores late in the half to end the match Newquay 5, Holmans 4.

NEWQUAY LADIES U16 4, HOLMANS 2

Gracious and tenacious host Holmans fell to Newquay Ladies Under 16 squad 4 to 2 on Sunday.  Both squads, playing under-strength, were aggressive and unhesitant to the ball in a quick action match.  Newquay started strong with Jo Hodges scoring first at 8:38 on a cross from Beth Pearce that built from a ball sent in by Jenni Tew down the side.  Beth then answered with her own score at 15:58 from a ball that was delivered from powerful center mid Shamane Bennett.  Holmans fought back for the rest of the first half but Newquay’s defense, with Cat Kelly and Becky Wilton playing out of their customary positions, held firm.

The start of the second half saw Holman’s come out with a vengeance to take advantage of a flat Newquay side and score with a strong high shot from mid-field 1:48 in to the half to which Keeper Charlie Curnow could not quite stretch.  Beth Pearce answered with a vengeance, battling her way through Holman’s defense two minutes later to make it 3-1.  Newquay patiently maintained pitch control for the most of the remainder of the match.  Jo Hodges added another goal, which built up from Newquay’s left-side fullback Cat Kelly who sent the ball up for Jo to deftly turn past Holman’s defense for the score.  With both short sides showing fatigue, Holmans managed the final score of the match with 6:30 remaining by following up on a cleared ball from their defense with dogged determination.  Final score:  Newquay-4, Holmans-2.
